Google Android became the top operating system on smartphones in the US for the first time in the last quarter, according to top industry analysts.

More smartphones sold with the Android operating system than any other in the US during the months April, May and June, a report by Gartner states.

The actual figure of 4.96 million devices is just ahead of RIM’s BlackBerry operating system which featured on 4.84 million devices sold, followed by Apple’s iOS in third with 3.22 million smartphones sold.

Gartner adds that Nokia’s Symbian operating system was on just 420,000 devices sold in the US.

However, Symbian is the most popular operating system globally, featuring on 25.3 million devices sold worldwide. RIM was second globally, with Google Android in third and Apple iOS in fourth.

The news will not only boost Google but manufacturers such as HTC, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG and Motorola who have all released smartphones running on the system.

HTC and Samsung in particular have contributed to the boom with the HTC Desire and Samsung Galaxy S proving massively popular, as seen in the huge number of people wanting to compare deals on the smartphones on MobileShop.com.

Sony Ericsson also scored a hit at the European Imaging and Sound Association (EISA) Awards, picking up the gong for the European Mobile Phone of 2010-2011 for the Xperia X10 Mini, which has proven to be a hit for more budget-conscious Android fans.

While Apple will argue the figures will not take into account iPhone 4 sales from July onwards, Samsung will argue many Galaxy S sales have happened post June.

And the flexibility of Android is its not-so-secret weapon – it can feature on more handset models than other operating systems, as RIM and Apple’s operating systems are tied to their own devices such as the BlackBerry Curve 8520 or iPhone 4 16GB.

There’s also some huge Android releases coming up, with the HTC Desire HD, aka the HTC Ace, being the most talked about, which only means Google is going to go from strength-to-strength in the smartphone market in the run-up to Christmas.
